the best way to learn Korean

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

I am writing today the absolute best way to learn Korean or any language. Now it's almost too niche but I think it's so funny and unique that I have to share it.

Here is a screen after I finish singing karaoke with my best friend Kimberly. Korea has this amazing thing called a noraebang which is a singing room. You get your friends in a small square room and choose many many many songs and sing as loud as you want. On this day we chose 15 songs and only three of them are completely in English. There is basically every English song imaginable and every Korean song possible so many things to choose from.

Here is the advice, singing songs and learning the language. I am very lucky to have Kimberly who knows so much Korean and Korean music that she can play almost anything and get it down. If I listen to her for a bit I can get the chorus and many other parts of the Korean songs as well. With practice, I can master the slower songs when the Korean words move slowly across the screen. With lots of repetition, I can also get more hype songs down too. I am nowhere near perfect but it's an extremely fun and low-stress way for me to practice reading and pronouncing Korean.

Kimberly also gives me lessons on what some lyrics mean. With her help, I can understand the songs as I am singing them too. After being in Korea for 7 months and going to sing karaoke almost every week I realized I am making fast progress. Some songs come much easier to me now. Singing with Kimberly also boosts my mood because we choose very energetic and dramatic songs to let out stress from the week. If you heard us in the noraebang you would probably run away laughing. We aren't bad singers by any means but we put 150% energy into every song to where our throats hurt after 5 songs. Also, many times the songs we choose have a rap portion where we cannot even read the screen before it goes by so we end up laughing during the songs.

Overall I highly recommend learning music and lyrics to practice a language. My brain loves connecting the dots between things and finding words I know, or conjugations or slang makes me happy and enjoys the language learning journey even more!
